History
Gulfview Middle School, Naples’ inaugural school since 1938, holds historical significance.
Before the late 1950s, African-American students in Naples lacked a local high school. They were bused to Fort Myers and later to Immokalee.
In the 1950s, elementary schools for black children opened, gradually extending to high school. George Washington Carver High School, inaugurated in 1959, marked a pivotal moment.
Integration began in the mid-1960s when Herbert Cambridge moved from Carver to Naples High School. By 1968, black students were reassigned to white schools, leading to Carver’s closure.
