 History

The current school system resulted from a 1976 merger between the historically white Wake County school system and the historically minority Raleigh City schools.

Business leaders proposed it in the early 1970s to combat “white flight” and promote desegregation.

Initially unpopular, the North Carolina General Assembly mandated the merger.
