Wake County Schools History
In 1976, Wake County merged its historically white school system with Raleigh City’s predominantly minority schools.
Business and political leaders advocated for the merger to combat “white flight” and fulfill desegregation mandates, despite its initial unpopularity.
The North Carolina General Assembly enforced the merger.
